Seat heating in the car: Why it can be expensive

The background to this is a general problem that can quickly arise when driving: improper use of the seat heating in the car (or other devices) can lead to safety risks, especially if it is operated while driving and the driver’s attention is thereby impaired.

In Germany, according to Paragraph 23, Section 1a of the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO), it is officially forbidden to operate electronic devices while driving a car in such a way that road safety is endangered. This also applies to operating the seat heating via touchscreens or other electronic controls.

Court ruling confirms fines

One example of this is a ruling by the Karlsruhe Higher Regional Court, in which a driver, according to t-online, operated the touchscreen of his vehicle while driving to control the windshield wipers and in doing so left the road. The court imposed a fine of 200 euros and a one-month driving ban.

Therefore, functions such as seat heating in the car should be set before setting off to avoid distractions while driving. Operating such functions while driving can not only lead to fines, but also endanger road safety.
