Inter-party dialogue committee: NPP, NDC in Obuasi East preach peace ahead of 2024 general elections

Ahead of the 2024 general elections, political parties in the Obuasi East constituency have been preaching peace and are optimistic of free and fair elections.

Speaking to the media at the end of a ceremony to outdoor members of the inter-party dialogue committee in the Obuasi East district, representatives of the two major political parties said the parties are committed to a peaceful elections.

According to the Obuasi East women’s organizer of the NDC Hajia Alematu Abudul Malik, the party has demonstrated beyond reasonable doubt that it is committed to upholding the existing peace in the country. She said it was imperative to preserve the peace the country is enjoying.

” we are a peaceful country which we have demonstrated over the years. The impending elections is for the country to prove that it is the beacon of democracy in Africa and a test case as a peace loving people “, she said.

Her counterpart in the New Patriotic Party Cynthia Peprah said she was convinced that the elections will be peaceful, free and fair after listening to representatives of the Ghana Police and the electoral commission. She urged supporters of political parties to eschew all forms of violence before, during and after the general elections.

The Obuasi East directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education inaugurated the inter-party dialogue committee.  The committee comprised representatives of the various political parties in the Obuasi East constituency; security agencies, religious leaders, and the media, among others.

The initiative, a brainchild of the NCCE is fnancially supported by  the European Union (EU) to work towards averting violent extremism and promoting peaceful coexistence and national cohesion.

The Obuasi East Director of the NCCE Jennifer Ofori in her interview said the committee would roll out series of activities targeted at preaching peace before, during and after the elections.

She said the group with its stakeholders will monitor the various channels of communication to check the use of abusive words by political actors.

” we are hitting the ground running with activities lined up to ensure we have  peaceful general elections. This is only our maiden meeting, there are about four meetings lined up to deliberate on the best way forward “, the ncce director added.

The Obuasi Police commander ASP Adam Muakalu said elections are about decision making through the power of the thumb. The processes he said does not warrant violence.

He assured that the Police is always on hand to ensure the protection of human life and property before, during and after the elections.

An official of the electoral commission Albert Owusu Boakye took participants through the dos and don’ts involved in the electoral processes.

He pledged the ECs commitment to ensuring  free and fair elections.
