Rotaract Club of Obuasi, Kumasi Contribute to Water And Sanitation in Ghana Schools

The Rotaract Clubs of Obuasi and Kumasi are impacting 8 Schools in their joining communities with 80 school toilet units and 2 mechanised boreholes. In a sod-cutting ceremony held at Okyerekrom, community leaders, chiefs, students and the members of the Akrofuom district joined to celebrate these feet.

Water and Sanitation is notable among the 7 areas of focus where Rotary engages with its communities globally.

The theme for the 2024/25 Rotary year is “Magic of Rotary”. This as witnessed in this project with a budget $ 57,000 will impact over 4,800 lives in Ashanti Region of Ghana and being financed by the Rotary Foundation, Rotary International Districts, Rotary/Rotaract/Interact Clubs across six countries. Eight schools have been selected to benefit from a 10-seater biofil toilets. Two of these schools will additionally get mechanized boreholes to support their WASH needs.

The other schools will also be provided with water access in our pending projects.

This project is being led by Rotaractors of Obuasi, Kumasi; Ghana District 9104, William and Mary; District 7600 USA, Adalar; Turkey with EClub Premier 7040, Canada as International Sponsors.

The objective is to support Schools in Ghana with water and sanitation facilities, train community members on hygiene, empower school girls on menstrual hygiene and the supply of sanitary towels to vulnerable girls.

The beneficiary schools are Okyerekrom D/A School, Adamso Primary/JHS, Buoho JHS, Kokotenten Primary/JHS, Akrofuom R/C School, Afrancho D/A School, Betenase Primary School and Penteng JHS.

Walter Hughes Jr and Mark Holland (visiting rotarians from USA) shared the importance of this project to the entire Rotaract world. This first global grant being led by Rotaractors in District 9104, Ghana will pave way for the young leaders to extend support to their joining communities.

Rotractor Godfred Acheampong challenged the students to dream beyond their limits along their academic journey. He also touched on mentorship programs Rotary will be unveiling within the schools.

District Chief Executive Officer for Akrofuom, Rotarian Maurice Jonas Woode, also charged the community to enforce the sustainability measures aligned to these interventions and commended the efforts of the young leaders in Rotary for making possible this impactful project.

Member of parliament for Akrofuom, Hon. Alex Blankson also graced the event to affirm his commitment on all the projects being implemented by Rotary.

President of Obuasi Rotaract, Samuel Nuoma also elaborated on the need for support for collaboration to improve the health conditions of our schools through water and sanitation interventions. “Water as said Is Life”.

The Chief and regeant of Okyerekrom Nana Agyei Amoako Ogyampa II further appreciated the good deeds of Rotary through the outreach of Rotaractors within his community and the entire nation. He used the opportunity to declare his pledge at keeping these projects sustainable and well maintained to drive continuity.
