New York and beyond rattled by rare East Coast earthquake

New York and cities on the US East Coast are assessing the impact of a rare earthquake that swayed landmarks and cracked roads.

The magnitude-4.8 quake struck at 10:23 local time (15:23 GMT) near Lebanon, New Jersey, and could be felt from Pennsylvania to Connecticut.

Residents spoke of being rocked by a violent rumbling that threw objects around their homes and damaged walls.

Officials are now conducting safety assessments of infrastructure.

In New York, the Statue of Liberty was seen swaying, while workers and residents across the city’s five boroughs reported violent rumbling.

Jane Coxwell told the BBC she felt a “rattling” like a train passing while she was in a building in lower Manhattan. “Living in New York I have become accustomed to rattling from the subway. That’s what I thought it was,” she said.

“Then I realised I was on the ninth floor. It was a bit unsteady for sure. It felt like a passing train.”

Brooklyn and the Bronx residents reported rattling cupboards, doors and fixtures.

Charita Walcott, a 38-year-old from the Bronx, said the quake felt “like a violent rumble that lasted about 30 seconds or so”.

Another New York resident told the BBC’s US partner CBS News how their lazy morning suddenly turned. “I was laying in my bed, and my whole apartment building started shaking. I started freaking out,” they said.

At the UN Security Council headquarters, a meeting on Gaza was temporarily paused due to the tremor. “Is that an earthquake?” said Save the Children representative Janti Soeripto, who was speaking at the time.

Aircraft at two airports – JFK in New York and Newark in New Jersey – were temporarily grounded while runways were inspected.

Yet for all of the drama, New York state Governor Kathy Hochul said there had been no reports of major damage or injuries. She warned of the possibility of aftershocks, even if the chances were slim.

She added that officials had started a damage assessment across the state to ensure the safety of buildings and infrastructure. “It’s been an unsettling day, to say the least,” she added.

Odeneho Kofi Appianin Ennin Donates to Fire-Burned Family in Obuasi

In a heartwarming gesture of compassion and community support, Odeneho Kofi Appianin Ennin, an independent parliamentary aspirant for Obuasi West, has stepped forward to aid a family devastated by fire burns. Last week Thursday, heavy downpours wreaked havoc in the quiet suburb of Koffekrom, leaving behind a trail of destruction that included numerous properties.

The affected family, grappling with the aftermath of the incident, received a lifeline when Mr. Appianin learned of their plight. Hosted on Aseda FM’s morning show, he wasted no time in taking action. Swiftly releasing 5,000 Ghanaian cedis (GHS) from his own resources, Mr. Appianin demonstrated his commitment to alleviating their suffering.

The presentation took place at the Aseda FM premises, where the General Manager, Nana Kwaframoa Ennin, stood in for Odeneho Kofi Appianin Ennin. Alongside them were Mr. Francis Antwi, the CEO of Aseda FM, and Obarima Kojo Gyamfi, the Morning Show Host. Their presence underscored the collective effort to provide solace and assistance during this challenging time.

Tragically, two children from the affected family sustained burn injuries when the roof of their house collapsed during the heavy rainfall. Their pain and struggle have not gone unnoticed, and Mr. Appianin’s donation aims to ease their burden.

Taiwan Shaken by Most Powerful Quake in Decades

Taiwan has been jolted by its most intense earthquake in 25 years, registering a formidable 7.4 on the Richter scale. The tremor, which struck close to Hualien city, has tragically claimed the lives of at least seven individuals, with rescue operations underway for 77 others feared trapped beneath the rubble of collapsed structures.

The quake’s devastation was particularly acute in the mountainous terrains of Hualien, where landslides have wrought havoc, severing connections and leaving damage that may take considerable time to mend. Among the casualties were three hikers, who perished due to rockfalls triggered by the seismic activity.

Even the nation’s capital, Taipei, located far from the epicenter, experienced the quake’s might, with videos capturing buildings in a state of violent agitation. The initial aftermath of the quake saw tsunami warnings issued across the island and to neighboring countries, though many have been withdrawn as the situation stabilizes.

This seismic event stands as a stark reminder of the island’s vulnerability to natural disasters, prompting a review of preparedness and response strategies to better safeguard the lives and livelihoods of its residents.

Passports Not Primary ID Anymore: Foreign Minister Urges Ghanaians to Use National Identification

In a recent press briefing, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, made a compelling case for Ghanaians to reconsider the necessity of holding a passport. With the effective implementation of the National Identification system, the minister highlighted that passports have been dethroned as the primary source of identification for Ghanaians.

The minister’s address to journalists underscored the sufficiency of the National ID for both identification and travel into Ghana, urging those without an immediate need for a passport, especially those who find the cost prohibitive, to abstain from applying. This call comes amidst concerns that government subsidies on passport applications may be unsustainable and could potentially degrade the quality of service provided to citizens.

In light of the government’s fiscal prudence, the Ministry has announced an adjustment in passport fees, effective from April 1, 2024. The revised fees are set at GHS800 for an expedited 48-page passport and GHS700 for a 32-page document, in accordance with the 2023 fees and charges regulations, L.I.2481.

The minister reassured the public that these adjustments are not intended to impose financial burdens but are a necessary response to economic realities. She also stated the ministry’s readiness to cooperate with any parliamentary review of the fee structure, emphasizing the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in its decision-making processes.

As Ghana navigates the complexities of identity management and fiscal responsibility, the minister’s declarations mark a significant shift in policy and public expectation, placing the National Identification system at the forefront of the country’s identity verification framework.

ECG might collapse if it complies fully with Cash Waterfall Mechanism – Atta Akyea

Chairman of the Energy Committee of Parliament and MP for Abuakwa South constituency, Samuel Atta Akyea says that full compliance with the Cash Waterfall Mechanism (CWM) could potentially lead to the collapse of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

He clarified that the Cash Waterfall Mechanism, while not enshrined in legislation, is a government policy outlining how ECG should manage its financial affairs.

Mr Akyea stated that ECG faces a revenue shortfall despite its efforts, resulting in insufficient funds to cover the services it provides.

He emphasised that if the Cash Waterfall Mechanism is pushed to prioritise certain power companies, leaving minimal resources for ECG to function, the implications would be dire.

“If we are not careful and we comply fully with the Cash Waterfall Mechanism, ECG will comatose because it doesn’t generate enough money to be operational,” he said on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, March 30.

He added, “You wouldn’t want to have a policy which is so stringent that ECG with all the challenges complying fully with the Cash Waterfall Mechanism will run aground and then have double trouble.”

The MP for the Abuakwa South constituency argues that he supports the actions of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) in directing the ECG to furnish a detailed report of its operations.

“The regulator is actually a creator of law. If you pay regard to Act 538, there is nothing that PURC is doing which is untoward.”

However, he stressed that the PURC should be careful regarding its approach to mechanical issues so that ECG will not collapse.

Meanwhile, Mr Akyea has urged the Electricity Company of Ghana to release a schedule for the current power outages.

According to him, there is no prior notice from ECG as electricity goes off abruptly, causing significant disruptions, emphasisng that the availability of a timetable would enable people to anticipate and adjust to unstable electricity, allowing them to plan their activities in advance.
